No society should be closed, but it also shouldn't be so open that it destroys itself.
Community should come first: if a new technology or "advancement opportunity" comes along, it should be weighed by its usefulness for the community as a whole, not a few people in it. It should be adopted only if it aligns with the social ideals established and agreed upon, and there should be checks and balances to be sure it's actually working the way it's meant to--and it should be abandoned or replaced if it isn't.
